Just recommending a great book for you to read from an unschooler in NZ (children aged 3 and 1). Author is an Australian lady called Dr. Louise Porter, "Children are People too". Has anyone read it?

Hello:)
i'm Red and i am the mom of 2 great kids..my daughter who is four and my son a very savvy 2. i'm REALLY new to this whole idea that i want to homeschooling/unschool (is this the same thing?). actually it is more than an idea it is a drive...i have place my daughter in 2 preschool/head start programs and both experiences have left me really terrified for many reasons.
my biggest concern is socialisation..need some good folks to hook up with for play/educational fun...while all on a tight budget...
i also could use some direction/education myself on homeschooling/unschooling...been reading up on the politics..found out about claiming myself a private school and such...anyone else have some good pointers? all advice is welcomed:)
thank you..

Just wanted to say if any unschoolers here are not familiar with Dayna Martin and her website, Unschooling America, please check her out! She is truly amazing. Here is a link to her series of YouTube videos, which lots of people have used to help them explain unschooling to their families, etc. http://www.unschoolingamerica.com/videos.asp

Dayna also hosts the Radical Unschooling email list, which gives me a great start to my day every morning.

MIL comments

Friday, my MIL was babysitting my kids for about an hour. When I got home I heard from dh that she would no longer babysit because our 3yr old wouldn't respect her authority. Turns out he did something (rode too far down the sidewalk) so she brought him inside for a 3 minute timeout. It turned into an hour of her trying to get him to sit still (think SuperNanny - MIL thinks she is great). We don't use timeouts so this was a completely new idea for him. Yesterday, when dh took somethings to her house she told him that she thinks that both of our boys are going to end up in jail (they are 3 and 6) because we don't send them to school and they don't respect authority (hers, mainly). She also said my daughter(10) was going to be assaulted because she likes to wear skorts and was climbing a tree in one. Turns out she thinks the skirt is too short. She also thinks that because dd isn't in school she will only be good as someone's wife. Part of me just laughs at the absurdity of her comments. My dh did stand up for us (and himself). He hated school and feels like school taught him to hate himself among other things. MIL commented that his sister seemed to like school. Dh replied that she liked it so much she never left (she just finished another degree at 40yr - of course we have no problem with this - her choice) Sometimes it's hard to see where she is coming from. This is the same woman who sent me a Ginott book, which doesn't seem to endorse punishments - of course she locked her own kids in their rooms and taught DH to bite himself when he is stressed. Generally I am just venting a bit.

I don't know how else to phrase that. Can't you get into trouble by not reporting to a board or something?

We are now Unschoolers

Well, we have done it! After 8 years of doing school at home, we have officially crossed over to the Unschooling side!! How freeing! We were very eclectic using all types of different methods. We would Unschool at times & it was great but then we would become more structured. I had a long talk with the children & asked them what THEY would like to do. They want to be Unschooled like we did in the past. Before that they all liked the structure so we went with it. I have always asked the children what THEY want to do in regards to their education.

I have many, many books on homeschooling & Unschooling. I also belong to the Always Unschooled group. We have tons & tons of books, learning materials, crafts, games, puzzles, educational toys, & more. We have always talked, done yoga/exercised, cooked, baked, gardened, learned & practice herbal medicine, read, explored nature, take of our pets & animals, shopped, played, collected things, (crystals, gems, stones, shells, feathers, & other things) followed astronomy, learned about others religious/spiritual beliefs, go to different churches, hang out with my children's friends, (i'm the cool mom-LOL) hang out with my sister & my niece, gone to museums & zoos, gone antiquing, & SO MUCH MORE!!!

I've come to the conclusion that Unschooling has always been in my blood. I would've done it sooner for good but I always listen to what my children need. They have never been to school but loved working in workbooks & texts. But now, they wish to have a more relaxed education so I am all to eager to provide that for them! Unschooling is so cool! I am so grateful for this Tribe. (As well as my other Tribes.)

at home artists unschooling

on the one hand, i most definitely do not want to send my kid (baby on the way) into a school system that is going to have him or her learning the same stupid stuff year after year, wasting his or her best, most energetic years being beaten into mental submission.

on the other hand, i want several hours a day to myself to write fiction. preferably very quiet hours.

i will say bluntly that i am worried about certain aspects of parenting. i know lots of people find every little mispronounced word and confusion of their child's utterly adorable and endearing. i have friends who have endless patience for tantrums and negotiations about socks. color me unmaternal. so far anyway. my parents always spoke to me like i was fully enfranchised human being, so perhaps that's why i expect my kid will land rather whole as well.

but they will still be a kid.

and i still don't want them in the school system.

and i still want to get to be an artist.

how are other folks balancing time to do their own exploratory work with unschooling?

what is unschooling for you?

how do you define unschooling? how do you describe it for your family?

our favorite unschooling definition is "pursuing our bliss".

when i tell neighbors and others who assume that my children have sit-down scheduled lessons each day that my children are free to do whatever they want with their time, i am jolted by their reactions into realizing that creates an entirely different picture for them than the one i intend.

i think they assume my kids watch cartoons, fight with each other, and eat ice cream all day. the lack of trust in a child's own motivation for learning is sad.

anyway, homeschooling for us means we are all busy pursuing things we love and new things that interest us. all the time. any way we please. we structure our home so that lots of educational and art materials are available for exploration no tv. kid-friendly set-ups with comfy places to read and nice desktops for projects, stools for kitchen assisting, kid size garden and cleaning tools, etc. easy access to nice outdoor spaces, lots of field trips. my husband and i work away at the things that we do, and so the kids see us reading, writing, researching, crafting, cooking, gardening, making music, etc., and they follow our example as well as lead us in new directions. we all respond to each other in this conscious journey.

our kids spend lots of time reading, doing math for fun and for practical reasons, asking questions and looking up answers, building, gardening, cooking, drawing, making things bubble and explode, learning to get along, doing puzzles and playing games, riding bikes and skateboards and rollerblades, playing outside all over the place, snuggling stuffed animals and each other, helping with housework because they want to, making friends, following workers around to learn what they do, pretending and imagining.

sometimes we have days or even weeks at a time where we don't do much of anything. sometimes we're just quiet. other times we're grumpy.

gotta go, baby is needing me.

hope you hear from you!

what do you do?

I am new to this group but this is my 3rd year homeschooling my children dd 10, ds6, ds 2. I do think that unschooling is the "right" way if there is such a thing, but I seem to have trouble accepting this from my 10 year old who is constantly complaining that she is bored and there is nothing to do while her friends are in school. She does not want to go to school herself, thankfully, but the whining is wearing on me. We have so many things available for her to do, she only needs to choose one. If I suggest it , it's a definite no, even with broad categories - art project, sewing, read a book, play piano, etc. I read David Albert and yearn for a child so interested in learning and wonder where did I go wrong? It's not that we don't have outside activities (sometimes I think a bit too much - but we manage). Any thoughts? does anyone else have a child that shuns learning?

"I am beginning to suspect all elaborate and special systems of education. They seem to me to be built upon the supposition that every child is a kind of idiot who must be taught to think. Whereas, if the child is left to himself, he will think more and better, if less showily. Let him go and come freely, let him touch real things and combine his impressions for himself, instead of sitting indoors at a little round table, while a sweet-voiced teacher suggests that he build a stone wall with his wooden blocks, or make a rainbow out of strips of coloured paper, or plant straw trees in bead flower-pots. Such teaching fills the mind with artificial associations that must be got rid of, before the child can develop independent ideas out of actual experience." -- Anne Sullivan

From public school to unschool?

After a loooong (and not quite over) year in first grade, I am rethinking school vs. home. I'm a huge fan of unschooling, my almost 7 year old boy is also feeling ready to escape the clutches of the daily grind and social circus of public school. I have only one hang up: he's really enjoying the structure of a daily routine within the classroom, and I am not naturally a structured person, at all. It's very difficult for me to create a routine let alone stick to it! This is why unschool appeals to me! How do you satisfy a kid who needs routine and structure and also maintain a steady creative flow? Is this possible???

Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves

Just read this book by Naomi Aldort and think it was really awesome. I am not usually a fan of books that provide 'plans' for dealing with things, or cute acronyms, but her SALVE plan is pretty wonderful at least in what it encourages us to do as parents--separate ourselves from our immediate emotional reactions to our kids, step back and figure out what we are really reacting to--some of our own baggage usually. The idea is to help us be with our kids through things like tantrums or other intense emotions without having to 'fix' it or stifle it. This is not unschooling specifically, but it goes along with and supports the the idea of a radical unschooling life.

It's awesome for me. I can't always get present in the moment, but I am learning to do so in a way I never have before and feeling thankful for that. For instance, when I am starving hungry, feeling the blood sugar drop, just finished fixing lunch for the boy and his dad and am now making myself something to eat and the boy comes in, feeling whiney, pulling on my pant leg until my pants fall down around my ankles (I need new pants!) and I have this instant reaction of feeling resentful and thinking 'why will you never let me eat, why does everyone around here get to eat but me?'. Where the heck did that come from? Sam doesn't have some nefarious plan to keep me from eating. He just has a little feeling of loneliness for me that he would like me to help him do something about, that's all. All the other stuff is straight out of some murky past business that has nothing to do with him. It's still hard for me to navigate that one cause if I don't eat right away blood sugar continues to drop and I get really cranky, but I can stop, pick him up, take him to dad and ask dad to take over for a little while, give Sam a hug and a kiss, eat my lunch and then go snuggle with him.

Anyway, not unschooling per se, but isn't everything really unschooling when it comes down to it?

Encouraging Reading and Writing

My daughter has been making me crazy. She's got no interest in learning how to read or write. I don't know how to help her develop an interest. I've tried telling her that when she learns to write we can write letters and stories to send to Daddy. I've tried telling her that when she learns to read, she can read stories to the baby, since she's been on and off about wanting to do everything for him. She loves having me read her books. I've even tried to have her help me read books, but there's no interest. She doesn't want anything to do with anything that involves letters, the alphabet, reading, and writing. I know she can recognize her letters, or at least some of them, but she also has a tendency to pretend she doesn't know things I know very well she does know. I just don't know how to help her with that. I'm starting to feel like a bit of a failure because my child is four and doesn't even know the alphabet! I just don't know what to do. Any ideas?

Female empowerment books?

I'm looking for some books that represent female empowerment for my little girls. My daughter is 15 months, and I'm pregnant with another little goddess due in February. I'd like to have books in our library that aren't all about the prince in shining armor coming to rescue a damsel in distress!

Can anyone recommend some great female empowerment books for young ones? The only story I can think of is Mulan lol, but surely there are more!

signing and speaking

haven't checked in in a while

but was just thinking about all the things my 16 mo old is learning these days
his language is skyrocketing, usually 2 new words a day, sometimes spoken, some signing
we decided to try the signing time videos w/ him a couple months ago, and he loved it and immediately started to pick up signs
i'd been showing him a few, and he'd only picked up "more"
he's seen 3 diff videos we got out from the library, but we're trying not to have them around and watch tv all the time, as he soon started asking for it, so we scaled back
but he continues to learn new signs that i llok up
i really think that when he realized what he could do communicating that way that it fueled his interest in speaking too
he has many more words than his friend who is 2 mo older
(not to brag)
and he's become more interested in things that he can talk about
all i hear/ see all day is: dog, truck, airplane, water, baby etc
my MIL loves to shop for him, and w/ his recent dog obsession she's been filling our mail box w/ board books about dogs
so we shouldn't have any trouble helping him to follow his interests in the future so long as we tell gramma what they are!

hi all!

i can't believe it took me until now to find this tribe! you all seem wonderful.

i am an english teacher, and i regularly teach john gatto's book, "dumbing us down: the hidden curriculum of compulsory schooling," a book i'm sure many of you are familiar with. now that i'm going to be a mommy, i'll have to actually practice what i preach.

i'm excited to get to know you all, and convince those of you with very young children or who are still expecting to join me in a new, alternative homeschooling/daycare/babysitting adventure. when i figure out that that's going to look like, anyway.

Hello..??!!

Just about a month ago I stumbled across this tribe, had never heard of unschooling before but since then have read and read and read about it, joined an email list and am now firmly committed to raising my little boy this way. He is only nine months old, but I am learning that this is a philosophy about raising children that can begin at birth and is about all aspects of learning.

I am so excited about this some days I can hardly contain it but as I mentioned before I live in a very isolated area and have no one to share it with except my husband, who is also really excited about this. Would love to be seeing posts here from unschooling people but it doesn't seem like there is much interest in this group? Is that because there are so many other unschooling sites and discussion areas available? Or is this just a lull?

I know there will be many challenges ahead, especially in the community where I live, which is very conservative and where I have been advised more than once that spanking is the only way to keep kids in line! But even so, liberated is the only way I can describe how I am feeling now about parenting. I remember as a kid that summer was the only time I ever felt comfortable in my skin. I remember the first time I tried to drop out of school I was only in the fifth grade. Told the office my family was moving and I wouldn't be back and just hung around the public library reading. Used to skip school to spend the day in the museum when I lived in San Francisco in sixth grade. I remember that I wanted to know so much about the world but that I was roadblocked at every turn and force fed crap I really didn't want to know.

I said when I was twelve that I would never need to know formal algebra as an adult because I was going to be a writer, and thirty years later I know that it's true. With unschooling, when my son says that sort of thing to me I can trust that he is right and honor his spark, his brilliance, and his own thirst for knowledge. I see it in him now as he pores over the grown up books on the shelves. He has gone from tearing the pages out to sitting down with them and learning how to turn the pages over. I know he doesn't read the words, but he is gaining something from the experience and he is absorbed by it. In this process some of my books suffered damage, but my son is becoming someone who loves books!

Not long ago a friend who has a nine year old daughter in school discovered a couple of months worth of unfinished math homework sheets crammed in a closet. The teacher and the mom were both quite distressed but the girl said she wasn't interested in math and didn't think she should have to do all that homework. I thought that was pretty fabulous myself, and the mom actually did, too, but since the girl was in school they had to find a way to convince her to do all that work she loathed. And it wasn't that she didn't know how to do it, she did, and whipped right through the pages. But so many hours wasted on such a dreadful subject when the sun was shining and there were so many more interesting things to do.

I remember the agony of that and I feel like the door to a secret garden of sunshine and wildflowers has been flung wide open for me and my family by a group of amazing pioneers called unschoolers. Now I finally feel like it's alright, even my obiligationg as his mother, for me to do all I can to avoid putting my son through that same school wringer.

In a nutshell--Hallelujiah!

Anyone out there want to revive this list?

Homeschooling / Unschooling or what else?

Hello, first of all....I just joined this Tribe and hope to find my answers here!

I am living with my 3 daughters here in the States now, but originally from Germany! In Germany Homeschooling or Unschooling is not allowed, so this is a total new "Territory" for me..... after sending my daughters to Public School here for a year, where they got treatments close to Childabuse, I decided i cannot let this happen to them or me no more. BUT.....now, total confusion. Unschooling sounds wonderful, because everything i know today, i only learned because i was interested in it! Very little i remember from when i was in School myself! Homeschooling...well.....don't i need Curricular again? I have no idea! I hope i can get some help here, because like i said, in Germany is a total different system, the first time i heard about Homeschooling / Unschooling was when i came here! Hence, it gives me a "strange" feeling on one hand, on the other it is more than intriguing rightnow!
If you have any suggestions, you can also mail me at ivithja@yahoo.de , not .com!

Thanks Petra

Thrifting for the Future

Well, I don't like the idea of hoarding things, have always believed it is better to spread the resources around and have faith that the future will take care of itself. But lately I have been a maniac about picking up things I think might interest Sam in the future. Now, while he is small and doesn't seem to mind it too much, I visit the thrift stores once a week or so. I have been collecting books for a library for him, since we live nearly an hour from the closest library and it doesn't have that much worthwhile anyway. Like yesterday I found a great art book for $2 with the most amazing project ideas and illustrations, and last week a book from the 50's about whittling animal figures, and books by Joseph Campbell and all the Harry Potters and so on. We have an empty outbuilding and we are literally going to turn it into a little library for him and any other kids in town (if there ever are any). Plus I pick up craft supplies that will keep for a couple of years (wooden things mostly), and cool games if they have all the pieces in place.

In this throwaway culture thrift stores are overflowing with amazing stuff for kids. It's very hard to practice discipline and not just buy everything! As it is, I already have a training bike for him and clothes up until he is 5 or 6...But soon we will not be able to visit the stores like that any more as he won't be a babe in arms, so that's how I justify buying these things now...

Would love to hear if other people hoarde for the future or are addicted to thrift stores, or if you take your kids and how do you handle the excess with the kids? That is, there is so much, for so cheap, if you take your kids how do you manage not to come home with a trunk full of junk?

Within the confines of 40 to 60 minutes, there is only so material for much students can absorb.
A program guide will, hopefully be available for teachers and, there is an outside change that I'll get one done for students, as well.

I am unfamiliar with what goes into unschooling. I have been homeschooling with various curriculum for the past 4 years but I would like to move toward unschooling. How do you do it and still ensure your child is learning all they need to? I am looking forward to all the insight you can offer. By the way all of my kids are elementary age.

Dear Editor

Regarding “Uncovering an Epidemic — Screening for Mental Illness in Teens” by Richard A. Friedman, M.D.

I strongly object to The New England Journal of medicine throwing away its own reputation by allowing itself to be used in a misguided effort to legitimize the sleazy marketing ploy which calls itself “Teenscreen”.

The credibility of The New England Journal of medicine has been badly damaged by choosing to publish this blatant example of advertising masquerading as an informative article.

I suggest that in order to recover its reputation,The N.E.J.M hire a reputable investigative reporter to research and expose Teenscreens long history of unethical behavior.

From the funneling of pharmaceutical moneys thru front groups such as the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, to its history of screening children without parental consent to its refusal to show its “test” to parents and school board members; the teenscreen organization has shown itself to be secretive and dishonest.

With its absurdly high rate of false positives,Teenscreen is a program that is as likely to do great harm as good. Look deeper and you will discover that this is nothing more than a furtive scheme concocted by the pharmaceutical industry to sell more drugs.

The New England Journal of medicine has much to lose by aligning itself with insidious corporate PR firms and disreputable organizations. If The New England Journal of medicine continues to allow itself to be used to launder the filthy reputations of organizations such as teenscreen, The Journal will cease to have relevance and indeed will end up with no more prestige than the real-estate magazines produced by realtors to order to sell houses.

In order to maintain its high professional standards The New England Journal of medicine must now expose Teenscreen for what it is, a conniving, mendacious effort to further expand the coffers of a bloated and devious pharmaceutical industry.

By the way, Teenscreen claims that its only critics are scientologists.
I have no connection to the Church of Scientology what so ever.

Sincerely

In the last few months There have been three school shootings in the news. At least two of those school shooters were on antidepressants, as have been the majority of all of the shooters in the gun-related massacres that have made headlines over the past decade,
Most of these night mares have had one thing in common: They were perpetrated by people taking Prozac, Zoloft, Luvox, Paxil or a related antidepressant drug.

A new website has been launched providing ready public access to more than 1,000 of these news reports,
http:// www.ssristories.com

And violence is not the only danger posed by antidepressants. The internet is full of sites attempting to warn people about the many dangers.

New online unschooling / learning community for *all* ages!

Life Learning Community (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lifelearningcommunity) is an online learning community I am attempting to nurture. We are a diverse, inter-generational learning community where autodidacts and independent learners of all ages can discuss, support, and inspire each other on our personal learning paths. The only requirement is an interest in learning consciously and with passion.

This may differ from other unschooling lists in that: 1.) We are primarily concerned with our own learning (and that of others on the list). 2.) Adult learners have unique problems that many unschooling groups don't address. (We will.) 3.) Younger learners can benefit from a learning community that includes people of all ages and walks of life.

Encouraged:

Involvement. Members who wish to take initiative in transforming this "list" into a genuine community, into something ever evolving and growing, which will better serve us all. It belongs to every one of us. Lurkers are welcome too, of course. :)

Creativity. Creative out-of-the-box ways to do / learn / accomplish anything. Using portfolios and creative approaches to getting a job you want or getting into college or unschooling college and making your skills and talents shine...

Writing and Sharing Learning Plans. While we understand that some of the best learning is spontaneous and we value that, we also believe that setting concrete goals -- even the act of writing them down -- can be empowering and fun.

Mentorship. Take on the role of mentor in some capacity for another member(s) of the community. We have the resources to help each other succeed. Mentorship relationships may be formally integrated into the community at a later date.

Collaboration. Taking an active part in each other's learning. We can help each other figure out what we most want to learn, and how, and then come up with a plan for doing it. We can collaborate with each other on projects as small as reading or discussing a book of mutual interest, or as large as anything we can imagine!

A Gift Economy. Give freely to community members and receive gladly. What you give is up to you... but give. :)

To be approved: share something a spammer wouldn't. :)

I have been a home mommy for 4 and a half years. My son Bodhisattva just started school last month. I'm not sure what to do with myself, so I end up power cleaning my house every day. I'm so thankful I found such a wonderful school, but I miss my little one. I thought I'd have the early day to work on my art, but I miss him so much. I just don't feel creative with him gone. I know that sounds strange, but it's how I feel. It's like being out of my element.

We are hoping to find other unschoolers in our area. There are a few
homeschoolers ages 1-6 in Bisbee but none older. My 8 year old is craving some older input.
Here's wishing.

hi!
i'm new here (to this tribe and unschooling) and i am confronting a MAJOR dilemma - my partner is REALLY NOT INTO homeshcooling and much less to unschooling. his reasons are as follows:
a) he seems to think i need to have 'credentials'
b) he worries our son will turn out anti-social (not a chance with me for a mom) or totally unruly
c) "Everyone should get the chance to go to high school" --huh?!?!
d) his mom is INSANE!!!

our son is 3.5 and i didn't register him for junior kindergarten (conveninet oversight on my part). the whole idea of homeschooling really fell into my lap in an odd way -- my adopted daughter is homeschooled by religious fundamentalists and is exceptionally bright and a joy to be with (minus the god part!) and she is the one who encouraged me to look into it for my son!

i'm really nervous and i need a few tips!

thank you!!!

I posted this in my blog but I thought this tribe might be interested. I recently dropped out of high school after my career there was marred by isolation and hazing. I wrote this poem when I first discovered literature on unschooling. Thank you for what you are doing to change this problem and I hope my experence can be inspiring for someone toeing the line about unschooling.

Stitches for my Injured Soul

They felt my presence that first day,
Sensed something different and stayed away,
Then one day they all got bored,
And circled round like a raging hoard,
Their faces so innocent there words so vile,
I was on public kinder garden trial,
As some passively watched my soul in plight,
They had the expression of wondrous delight,
They knew not what they said,
Only that they wished me dead,
They stole from me parts of my very soul,
I feared I never could again be whole,
What I did to deserve this fate,
I do not know to this date,

But by the disapproving glare of the faculty,
I knew they also wished to be attacking me,
They fear the children, who are not at ease,
For their responses to these atrocities,
They know what can happen when the lonely fight,
Against the masses and their might,
The anger wells up deep inside,
Something we can never easily hide,
I know I in this I am not alone,
That the entire planet has not hearts of stone,
The teacher pats the heads of her pets,

Sniff out the “bad ones” and destroy,
Is the function that they employ,
The rewards of doing her evil work,
Come in the in the form of self worth,
A gold star there, a great work here,
Leaves them felling superior,
Confidence is all you need,
In order to succeed,
I must tell this tale entirely,
It is not the teachers who conspiring,
It is those who we are to find inspiring,
Rockefeller, Morgan, and Carnegie,
Plotted long ago in pretence of philanthropy,
To ensure a century of wretched monopolies,
Why couldn’t they have just let me be,
When all I did was think freely?

This wont let me format this right but the original has three sonnets (not really they it lost meaning when I attempted to make it decasyllabic) that desend diagonally. I have printed this out before on paper with red under the lines so the words look like stitches on claw marks and hid copies at the library in books that I enjoyed growing up.

Not quite sure why I am posting this.

I know there are responsible families who cannot concieve but would be willing to consider using an ovum donor. Have you been a donor? Do you know someone who has? Please help me build a support community for this topic by spreading the word!

I think the unschooling method of teaching will help us find the bright, caring people with positive open minds that will help us make this exsistance more about learning who we are as a species and what we are supposed to be doing on this plane of existance. I think that some people think that ignoring attrocities is some sort of population control, when really, if you think about it, we wouldn't need population control if we didn't have to worry about this kind of stuff because we would have the energy and time to manage this planet properly to support our burgioning population or emmagrate to other planets.

Hello to all homeschooling/unschooling families!

This is my first post in Tribes, and my first year as a homeschooling parent. I have learned a lot about myself and my children (ages 7 and 10) during this time, and the process has been very rewarding. At the beginning of our experience, I bought curriculum from an accredited school (Oak Meadow), but shelved it after a few weeks in favor of materials that seemed to better stimulate our thinking and learning.

In two weeks, we will undergo our mandatory evaluation with a certified teacher. I am wondering what to expect from this, and would be very grateful for any advice you all may have based on your experiences. Thank you in advance for sharing!

any fellow teachers in this tribe?

i'm a teacher, currently with one foot in the public system, and one foot out. i've been teaching for just under 2 years, and got my own class for the first time this year.

after a few months of teaching this year, i knew it wasn't for me. i made it through the year (barely), and have recently been hired on by a local independant school for Indigo children.

i'd be really interested in hearing if anyone (parents, teachers, children) has had experiences with the public system that led them to turn to alternatives.

Hi!

I haven't posted here much but have been unschooling my kids for 3+ years. It's been great for us, and I'm very grateful that we have the opportunity to unschool.

Are there any unschooling dads here? I'm in Portland, OR and would love to hear from you.

Cheers,

Got Toys? :0)

Hey all! Recently I started working from home providing Discovery Toys to families so that I can continue staying home with my son (which is VERY important to me), hence the reason for this post.... :0) I think I finally found a way to stay home with my child and maintain my ethical boundaries while making money to support my family. How exciting is that! Given all of this, I thought that I would extend you all a offer to utilize my services. So here it goes.. :0)

Discovery Toys are wonderful in many ways.

1. They encourage positive interactions between parent and child.

2. Children learn as they play.

3. Discovery Toys is environmentally conscious! They use packing peanuts made out of corn starch which dissolves when wet and causes no harm to the environment.

4. Discovery Toys promote a healthy balance between mind, body and spirit.

5. What better way to do your Christmas shopping than from the comfort of your own home !?!

If you are at all interested in Discovery Toys, please visit my website at:

or you may contact me at:

Play with your children..Its the best investment you'll ever make!!! I hope this post finds everyone and their family well!

Namaste

I need a recommendation for a good child dentist in the Bay Area. My son has some cavities on his baby teeth. I have been completely negligent about getting them fixed because he completely breaks down in a crying panic when I discuss going to the dentist. This weekend, however, he started complaining that his teeth hurt and I know I have to really deal with this problem head-on now.

I'm looking for a kind dentist with a good manner who maybe had videos kids can watch while s/he's doing the dental work. Anything to make the experience more pleasant.............

Suggestions?

I'm so glad this tribe is here. My son is only 13 months old, but I am considering unschooling. I would like to know if other unschoolers in this tribe unschooled from the very beginning, or if your child went to preschool. I was thinking of having him go to preschool and kindergarden, but I love the idea of unschooling. Any thoughts?

So, after pulling my boy out of Waldorf in January, I am pleased to say that he is now going to a parent/child oriented mixed-grade school that his father and a core group of other parents worked their butts off to establush, WITH enthusiastic support of the Education Ministry and the local School Board. We already had such a mixed-grade class going in our town, which was so successful that a sister class was created, which instantly acheived and has maintained equal success and has a 2 year waiting list. So, my boys papa and the others realized any hope for a truly inspiring education lay with them, and they got to it. Classes begin Sept. 7th and the teachers, both long term primary educators, are gifts from above. Yay!!!

Are any of you working full-time and unschooling? Financial pressure and a good opportunity to get out of debt are tempting me to try. My husband travels about 20 days a month, so I know it will be QUITE a challenge. Anyone out there tried (failed, succeeded) at such a thing?

Hey there all, from Canada. I'd like to get the dialogue going again. I have a 7 yr old boy-wonder, who was in the 'kinder' program in Waldorf which proved so disappointing, proved to be way more rigid than playful. Pulled him out this January and began feeling that he needs structured learning cause everyone he meets asks what grade he's in and how his reading is. We began playing around at home with letters, basic phonics but he is resistant to pressured learning and performance ( is that so surprising? )... thing is, I can't get Joseph Chilton Pierce outta my head. Anyone else familiar with how he presents natural growth stages of the developing human? Academic learning is necessary yes, but at what stages in a child's development is the key. So, I wonder if I'm pushing too soon to have him know his letters, the basic rules of spelling etc...just cause society seems to deem that important at age 7. I want to hear from parents of children my son's age and older about how their kids are fairing in the world if they haven't been in mainstream school. Do they get teased by peers about their current abilities re: reading /writing ? Do they feel resentful they weren't sent to school? Does the child still pick up reading at say age 10 ? I'd love some feedback.

My son is 4 and my daughter is 3......i have been an at home mom since they were born, and i believe in homeschool and that teaching your own children is the best way, even though it requires much patience and time:) Next year my son will have to start something....i was thinking of homeschool for the first couple years and see how that goes....i was wondering if anyone knew of any special conditions that are required?.....i have heard it is different in every state, but that a degree from college need be there, i'm just asking because i haven't even been to college yet.
