haven't checked in in a while
but was just thinking about all the things my 16 mo old is learning these days
his language is skyrocketing, usually 2 new words a day, sometimes spoken, some signing
we decided to try the signing time videos w/ him a couple months ago, and he loved it and immediately started to pick up signs
i'd been showing him a few, and he'd only picked up "more"
he's seen 3 diff videos we got out from the library, but we're trying not to have them around and watch tv all the time, as he soon started asking for it, so we scaled back
but he continues to learn new signs that i llok up
i really think that when he realized what he could do communicating that way that it fueled his interest in speaking too
he has many more words than his friend who is 2 mo older
(not to brag)
and he's become more interested in things that he can talk about
all i hear/ see all day is: dog, truck, airplane, water, baby etc
my MIL loves to shop for him, and w/ his recent dog obsession she's been filling our mail box w/ board books about dogs
so we shouldn't have any trouble helping him to follow his interests in the future so long as we tell gramma what they are!

Re: signing and speaking
Tue, August 7, 2007 - 9:31 AMFunny, I have been thinking and thinking about this signing thing. In the beginning, we were definitely going to try to teach Sam to sign, then as we went along, it seemed like he was pretty capable of communicating whatever he wanted all on his own and I also started thinking more about the whole concept of teaching him things, so we left it alone. But now as his frustration level rises because he's having more trouble communicating, I'm thinking maybe we should make the effort. Do you remember what those videos are called? It couldn't hurt to see if Netflix has them and see if Sam is interested. -

Re: signing and speaking
Wed, August 15, 2007 - 12:52 AMthey're called "signing time"
i'm pretty sure that netflix doesn't have them
we've been getting them from the library
there are some other videos out there too, but i didn't like them as much, was mostly just signing along w/ songs, which wasn't really age appropriate
i also was looking for them on ebay thinking i could get them cheaper, but they're still pretty pricey

Re: signing and speaking
Thu, August 16, 2007 - 1:45 AMmy little girl loves to sign, but i don't put a whole lot of effort into it since i feel we communicate very clearly already. she says tons of words, has since birth. i notice that most people don't realize she has said a word or a sentence because they don't expect babies to talk so early. she is 17 months and she said her first word, "hi", soon after birth. i think just the simple act of acknowledging her spoken words has allowed her language skills to really blossom.
something cute: the big kids were watching a sponge bob movie in the van on our long drive to tennessee, and my little sol pointed to the screen and said, "spon bob". it was so cute and funny coming from such a little person. -

Re: signing and speaking
Fri, August 24, 2007 - 2:32 PMMy oldest went through a period of EXTREME frustration, until we added signing to our communication. She obviously understood what we were saying to her, but had no way to answer.
So now that we have a new baby, I'm really looking forward to bringing her up with signing, and letting them learn and teach from each other too! Not that we push it.....it's just another way of interacting, that has the nice side-effect of giving them more options. -

Re: signing and speaking
Sat, September 1, 2007 - 2:53 PMdecided to write down all eamon's spoken and signed words the other day as i was curious just how many he has now at 17 mo.
i came up w/ around 75 spoken words, 41 signs, with 25 words that he both signs and speaks
he's even been making up some of his own signs
he blows me away -

Re: signing and speaking
Fri, September 7, 2007 - 2:01 AMdang, that seems like a lot. definitely way more than my 18 month old is doing. wow!!!
my girl is starting to get frustrated all of a sudden, and i feel guilty that i haven't put more effort into teaching her signs. i feel overwhelmed right now by trying to meet three kids' needs. each of my kids is frustrated with me right now for not giving them more time for the things they want to do with me. the oldest wants to sit down and learn to read. the 3 year old wants me to play pretend with her for hours on end. the youngest wants to explore while pulling me around by my finger. they all want lots of food, all different from each other, all the time. they will let daddy or someone else cook for them when possible, but for the reading, the pretend games, and the exploring together (respectively), they are adamant that it can only be ME.
i've been through this before with them, and i know this phase will pass and things will smooth out, but right now it really is hard for all of us. -

Re: signing and speaking
Fri, September 7, 2007 - 7:29 AMI am so amazed by you mamas who have more than one baby. I don't know how I'd manage--where I'd find the energy! I want to work on signs with Sam, but I am often so exhausted that I just don't have the stamina to be consistent with it. I feel like we communicate really well, but I know that phase is coming when it will be really frustrating for him not to have language. He also has said words since he was tiny, or at least I think he has. Sometimes he'll say something perfectly clearly and maybe say it again, but then never another time so I don't know if he was just mimicking something and then the sound left his thoughts. He has a couple of consistent words, Mom, Dada, dog, down, hat, hi and others seem to come and go.
I want to do this signing thing, but also feel like my brain is too frazzled from sleep deprivation to actually learn the signs myself! Well, I will quit whining and give it a try. Meanwhile, Cheryl, my hat is off to you! -

Re: signing and speaking
Sat, September 8, 2007 - 11:43 PMi agree, i don't know i f i can handle having any more kids, tho i hear tell they can entertain eah other sometimes and give you some time to get other stuff done
and i have to admit that eamon doesn't use all those words all the time. some of them he's used only a handful of times or a bunch for a day or 2, then seems to forget them. and the more spoken language he has the more i forget to use or learn new signs
but i swear he's probably got another 20 words since i last counted...

The world is made of bunnies and flowers...
Thu, September 13, 2007 - 1:44 PMMy 12 mo. old is going crazy for them these days... and of course kitties which she refers to as 'aaiieee!', her version of meow. she also loves to smell flowers, even from far away, and even the pictures of them. i am trying to sign as much as possible with her, she knows milk, but has forgotton more and never really caught on to all done. i try to do things with as much enthusiasm as i can, but i have a hard time getting into abstract signs.... -

Re: The world is made of bunnies and flowers...
Sat, September 15, 2007 - 8:32 PMeamon's using signs less and less for words he can speak
well, he still does more when he says more, but i never see him sign baby or dog anymore, and those were his favorites
he did learn horse recently, but we haven't gotten any new videos (the library only seems to have the 1st 3) and i haven't been looking things up much anymore
maybe it's time to get back to spanish, which i had been trying to use daily before signing took over -

Re: The world is made of bunnies and flowers...
Sun, September 16, 2007 - 6:13 AMSam is talking more, but only in his own language!! He is actually saying more English words more clearly, but it's still a really small collection. However he has started this new things that sounds like he's speaking whole, clearly articulated sentences in another language! We're still not really signing, thought we've managed to establish a few, and his dada was pretty sure Sam flipped him off last night! (No, we have NOT been teaching him that!) -

Re: signing and speaking
Sun, November 18, 2007 - 7:26 PMYeah, older a baby, the quicker they pick up on signing. Same goes for things that are drilled into kids in school. I feel that an unschooled child can learn those things simply and quickly, later in life, with less time precious involved.
